Exhibition Launch
Join us for the launch of the opening of an online exhibition on Ayahs & Amahs: Transcolonial Journeys, a joint project produced by the University of Newcastle and the University of Wollongong.
The Ayahs and Amahs exhibition presents the stories, memories and histories of the intrepid Indian and Chinese nursemaids who accompanied employer families around the networks of the British Empire in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
This exhibition, an outcome of an Australian Research Council Discovery Project, focuses on the remarkable mobility of these earliest global domestic workers and the hands-on care they provided to the children under their charge.
Their lives and experiences, and the rich culture of representation that surrounded them, highlights how important the work of caring was to colonial and imperial projects.
