Sounds of the Asylum: A walking tour of Newcastle's James Fletcher Hospital

  • 4 Sep 2022
  • 14:00 - 15:00
  • James Fletcher Hospital 72 Watt Street Newcastle, NSW

Walking tour - Newcastle's James Fletcher Hospital

Walk the grounds of the James Fletcher hospital and learn about the site's long and diverse history.  As a place of mental health care, the James Fletcher hospital site in Newcastle remains unknown to many locals and visitors.

This walk will traverse the layers of the site's use: as Awabakal country, Government Domain, military base, Industrial School for Girls, asylum and psychiatric hospital.  The focus will be on sounds, listening and hearing, with talks and readings from a public historian and staff of the University of Newcastle's School of Humanities, Creative Industries & Social Science and the GLAMx Lab.

Cost:  Free
