Exhibition: Unearthing a 50-year Time Capsule
Have you ever wanted to create a time capsule? Have you ever made one, only to have it lost, forgotten about, opened too early or decompose in the wake of nature’s eroding forces? And what is the ideal length of time to bury a time capsule?
This year, Liverpool Regional Museum excavated a 50-year time capsule. To the heritage team’s astonishment, the time capsule’s content was intact, safely encapsulated in a copper container designed by local TAFE students. The time capsule was buried in 1972 by Liverpool City Council and the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mostly letters to the future, the time capsule was a carefully curated, and in many ways boldly optimistic, attempt to commemorate a century of local government in Liverpool (1872 – 1972). Engraved on the time capsule were instructions that it be opened on the 150th anniversary of local government in 2022. The time capsule was excavated this year and the museum team is contacting community members to open envelopes addressed to them found inside.
