Glimpsing Vintage Hong Kong: A Walking Tour of Hurstville
Discover Hurstville's rich intangible seam of traditional Cantonese food and cultural heritage on a walking tour of Forest Road with Kevin Tang, Secretary of the Chinese Australian Historical Society.
Hurstville was once an old Australian working - class suburb of Sydney then Hong Kongers came to the area post 1989 bringing their cultural heritage of their youth in the 1950s and 1960s.This world of suburban Hong Kong is about to vanish... but there are shades of old Kowloon in Forest Road. You'll see vintage Chinese bakeries, butchers, fish and seafood wet markets, grocery stores and enjoy favourite Cantonese snacks at a Hong Kong style cafe, Sun Ming. Join us for a nod at vintage Hong Kong in the interstices of Sydney suburban culture in the 2020s.
Participants must travel independently to Hurstville and meet the tour at the Forest Road entrance of Hurstville Railway Station at 10.45am.
We end the tour at Sun Ming Cafe for light refreshments. Guests may like to stay for lunch to sample their extensive menu of Western dishes and classic Cantonese comfort food.
Please note that lunch is not included in the tour.
