Historian Heather Goodall presents 'Uncovering Georges Rivers Heroes' the suburban battlers who saved the river, 1945-1980

The Georges River came under terrible threats after WW2: increasing industrialisation, overdevelopment, pollution and swelling household and populations. Local governments struggled with these problems but only came up with plans to ‘reclaim’ the wetlands for sports fields.

Local people along the river defended the riverbanks, bushland and fishing grounds they loved but their courage and determination has been ignored in the histories of environmental conservation. This talk focuses on three of these battles to save the river and the bush: East Hills in the 1950s, Lime Kiln Bay in the 1970s and Poulton Creek/Oatley Bay a few years later. Each community-led campaign used different tactics but they all tried – as their stickers said - to ‘keep bushland in their suburbs’!
