Memories of the Future, Volume II
An evening with University of Sydney Historians & Soundscape Musician
Ever since cold warriors orbiting the moon turned their cameras back to Earth, we have seen ourselves living improbably on a small and fragile planet. This planet, home to human and to all known life, now burns hot, breathes ragged, bruised by tearing winds and raging waters.
To live well here we must know the planet and ourselves more deeply. Even as we wrestle with problems of daunting, impossible scale, we must retell stories at our own scale. Trained to scour through the collected memories of others, historians wander through the foundations of worlds. Tonight, we turn to our own history, prizing words from memories about places that have formed us. Through our words, and through soundscape musical interludes, we work to re-enchant the world, and to lay down memories for the future.
This evening responds to the theme of History Week metaphorically. We are doing hands on history in the sense of rolling up our sleeves and turning, with difficulty, to our own lives to think and speak.
