Voices from Australia’s Banknotes

Online Interactive Exhibition

Tiny text, called ‘microprint’, can be found on sections of Australia’s banknotes. Not only is microprint a security feature, it is also a layer of history which tell us more about significant people on our banknotes and moments in our past. Each banknote’s microprint reveals episodes of history, such as an excerpt from Banjo Paterson’s ‘The Man from Snowy River’ on the $10, and Edith Cowan’s maiden speech to Parliament in 1921 on the $50. To highlight these great moments in history, the Reserve Bank of Australia Museum has given a voice to our notable Australians, including recordings from their descendants. Experience the Museum’s series of immersive audio recordings of microprint text via the RBA Museum website.
