Gudyarra (Panel discussion)
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the first sitting of the of the NSW Legislative Council (Upper House), as well as the first use of martial law in NSW against Aboriginal people in Bathurst. The Parliament of NSW is bringing together Elders of the Wiradyuri community and others who have worked closely with the Wiradyuri for an open conversation, exploring these formative events in our history.
The bicentenaries of these two events present a valuable and necessary opportunity to better understand how these significant developments evolved and shaped NSW history.
This panel discussion opens a conversation that reflects on this complex history, continues the journey of healing and truth-telling, and imagines a more inclusive future for democracy in NSW.
The Bicentenary of the NSW Legislative Council falls in 2024, marking 200 years since the newly established Council sat for the first time in 1824 and the birth of the country’s very first legislature. It’s a once-in-lifetime opportunity to reflect on our incredibly rich and complex journey, celebrate our successes and impact, and together imagine a robust parliamentary democracy of the future. This event is part of an exciting program of events to mark the Bicentenary.
