Talk - History marked in stone and in our hearts : legacies of our Serbian heritage

Join us at St Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Church, Alexandria, to discover how the Serbian diaspora marks its forefathers' history through time and across the oceans. We will share pictures, poetry and music and hear from historians and art specialists to discover the stories and monuments that record our homeland's history and shape our identity today.
From their earliest history, Serb lands have been the battlegrounds of empires - from the time of the Romans and Byzantines, through to later conquest, partition and occupation by the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires, and the devastation of the World Wars. The memories of our ancestors' sacrifices are a fundamental part of Serb identity. However, physical traces of the past and many of the monuments to their heroism are under threat.

From the humblest roadside headstones to massive memorial complexes, monuments across our homeland are succumbing to neglect or being deliberately destroyed. While stone monuments may fade, the tragedies, triumphs and figures of the past ascend into the untouchable realms of poetry, song, dance and stories that are passed down through the generations.
